Dal Rasam is one of the most popular, healthy, and traditional South Indian dishes, loved for its comforting warmth and soothing flavors. Made with tamarind, tur dal, garlic, tomatoes, and aromatic spices, this rasam is light on the stomach yet full of taste π.

Ingredients
Tamarind β small lemon size
Boiled tur dal β Β½ cup
Oil β 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds (Rai) β Β½ tsp
Cumin seeds (Jeera) β Β½ tsp
Hing (Asafoetida) β 1 tsp
Curry leaves β 1 bunch
Tomato β 2 (chopped)
Green chilli β 1
Crushed garlic β 5 to 8 cloves
Salt β as per taste
Turmeric powder β Β½ tsp
Rasam powder β 1 tbsp
Jaggery β 1 tsp
Coriander leaves β Β½ cup (chopped)

This simple homemade Dal Rasam is easy to prepare, nutritious, and perfect for everyday meals. When served hot with steamed rice, it creates a wholesome and satisfying meal that brings pure comfort πβ¨. It can also be enjoyed as a warm soup, especially on rainy or cool days.
In this recipe, letβs see how to make South Indian style Dal Rasam at home in a few easy steps.
Wash the tamarind and soak it in water and keep it aside.
Tempering and Cooking the Base
Heat a pan on medium flame.
Add 1 tablespoon of oil.
Once the oil is hot, add Β½ tsp mustard seeds (rai) and allow them to splutter.
Add 1 tsp hing (asafoetida) and one bunch of curry leaves and sautΓ© briefly.
Add the chopped tomatoes and fry for 2 minutes until they soften.
Add the crushed garlic, one green chilli, 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera) and mix well.
Adding Dal & Simmering
Add Β½ cup of boiled tur dal along with some water.
Mix well, close the pan with a lid, and cook for 5 minutes.
Once the tomatoes are well cooked, gently mash them using a spatula.
Adding Spices & Tamarind
Add Β½ tsp turmeric powder and the prepared tamarind pulp.
Pour in one glass of water.
Add salt to taste and 1 tbsp rasam powder, then mix well.

Final Touch
Add 1 tsp jaggery and chopped coriander leaves.
Allow the rasam to cook until it comes to a boil.
