Dal Fry is a classic and comforting Indian dish made using toor dal (yellow lentils), aromatic spices, and a flavorful ghee tempering. Simple to prepare yet incredibly satisfying, this dish is a staple in Indian homes and pairs perfectly with rice, roti, or chapati.

Ingredients
Toor Dal (Tur Dal) β 250 g
Ghee β 1 tbsp
Oil β 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds (Rai) β Β½ tsp
Cumin Seeds (Jeera) β 1 tsp
Hing (Asafoetida) β 1 tsp
Red Chilli β 1
Curry Leaves β 1 bunch
Garlic (chopped) β 5β8 cloves
Green Chillies (chopped) β 3
Onion β 1
Tomato β 2
Salt β to taste
Turmeric Powder β Β½ tsp
Cumin Powder (Jeera Powder) β Β½ tbsp
Red Chilli Powder β ΒΌ tsp
Coriander Leaves β Β½ cup
Preparation Method
Take toor dal in a pressure cooker, wash it thoroughly, and soak it for 30 minutes.
Once soaked, add two glasses of water and 1 teaspoon salt.
Close the lid and pressure cook until you hear two whistle sounds.

Heat a kadai and add 1 tablespoon ghee and 1 tablespoon oil.


Add Β½ teaspoon mustard seeds (rai) and 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera), and let them splutter well.






Add 1 teaspoon hing (asafoetida), one red chilli, and one bunch of curry leaves, and fry for a minute.
Next, add 5β8 cloves of chopped garlic and three chopped green chillies. Mix well.








Add one chopped onion and fry until it turns soft and light golden.


Once the onion becomes soft, add two chopped tomatoes.


Add salt as per taste, keeping in mind that 1 teaspoon salt was already added while cooking the dal.


Now add the boiled toor dal along with one glass of water, mix well, and cook for 5β10 minutes.






Add Β½ teaspoon turmeric powder and cumin powder.
Then add ΒΌ teaspoon red chilli powder and cook for 2 minutes.
