Red Tomato Gravy, also known as Tomato Kulambu or Tomato Kadayal, is a simple and homely South Indian side dish. Thereβs nothing fancy about this recipe, yet it is incredibly tasty, comforting, and satisfying π.

Ingredients
Oil β 1 Β½ tbsp
Mustard Seeds β Β½ tsp
Chana Dal β 1 tsp
Urad Dal β ΒΌ tsp
Onion (chopped) β 1 cup
Tomato (chopped) β Β½ kg
Green Chilli β 3β4
Salt β as per taste
Water β 1 Β½ cups
Sugar β 1 tsp (optional)
Curry Leaves β 1 bunch

Important Note: This recipe is easy to make, light, and gentle on the stomach.
It is ideal for babies, kids, elders, and senior citizens, and also suitable for people with digestive or stomach-related issues.

Made with fresh tomatoes, onions, mild spices, and basic tempering, this gravy pairs beautifully with idli, dosa, chapati, and even plain rice. It is light on the stomach, easy to digest, and suitable for all age groups π½οΈβ¨.
In this recipe, letβs see how to make Red Tomato Kulambu at home in a few easy steps.
Prepare the Base
I am using one big onion and a few small onions.
(You may adjust the quantity as per your preference.)
Tempering
Heat a kadai and add 1 Β½ tbsp oil.
Once the oil is hot, add Β½ tsp mustard seeds,1 tsp chana dal, and ΒΌ tsp urad dal.
Fry until the dals turn golden brown.
Cook the Onions And Tomatoes
Add 1 cup chopped onions to the kadai.
Fry for 2β5 minutes until the onions turn soft and lightly cooked.
Note: You can use any variety of tomatoesβdesi or apple tomatoes.
Always use ripe tomatoes. If you prefer less sourness, apple tomatoes work best.
Add Β½ kg chopped tomatoes, 3β4 slit green chillies and salt as per taste mix well.
Pour 1 Β½ cups of water and mix well.
Close with a lid and cook for 5β10 minutes.
Mash the Gravy
Once the tomatoes are soft and fully cooked,
use a dal masher or potato masher.
Mash the tomatoes well to form a thick, smooth gravy.
Final Touch
Garnish with fried ΒΌ tsp mustard seeds and one bunch of curry leaves.
Add 1 tsp sugar (optional) to balance the taste.
Mix well and close with a lid.
